UCSF Health

A Love Letter to San Francisco

UCSF Health is globally known for its advanced patient care, groundbreaking research, and innovation. But beyond its reputation for tackling the most serious clinical challenges, UCSF also plays a deeply rooted, everyday role in San Francisco — caring for its communities and reflecting the soul of the city. Kiosk partnered with UCSF to launch “A Love Letter to San Francisco,” an omnichannel brand campaign that celebrated the city, shifted perception, and deeply connected the health network to its home.

Despite UCSF Health’s stellar reputation, public perception was skewed toward “complex, high-level medicine.” What was missing was a narrative that positioned UCSF as part of the fabric of San Francisco — not just a world-class medical institution, but a local neighbor, a proud steward, and a brand that loves the city as much as it heals it.

For the campaign to resonate, it couldn’t feel like sterile healthcare marketing. The message needed to show up where San Franciscans live: on their streets, in their neighborhoods, and in the collective memory of the city. Authenticity would come from integrating into the everyday rhythm of SF — not just broadcasting at it.

Strategy & Execution

Reimagining enrollment marketing for a modern audience

Kiosk designed a city-centric campaign that wove UCSF’s brand into San Francisco’s cultural fabric in bold, creative ways:

  • Out-of-Home Installations: 190+ placements across the city — street murals, public art, and iconic locations — to literally wrap San Francisco in UCSF’s love for its community.

  • Experiential Activation: A hand-painted mural by renowned SF artist Maxfield Bala.

  • Local Influencers: Partnered with San Francisco influencers to create content that felt rooted and authentic.

  • Multichannel Media: TV spots aired alongside major local sports franchises (e.g., Giants), primetime integrations (e.g., Olympics), and Spanish-language creative to reflect SF’s diverse communities.

  • Community Focus: Messaging tailored for different neighborhoods and segments, such as outreach to the LGBTQ+ community, to make the campaign feel inclusive, expressive, and rooted in real San Franciscan lives.

Results

City-driven stories resonate more than clinical messaging.

This campaign proved that when a healthcare brand tells a city’s story, it wins hearts — not just attention. By embedding UCSF’s message into San Francisco through art, media, and lived experience, the brand transformed from a distant medical institution into a neighbor, a patron, and a storyteller. The mix of creative placements, local influencers, and culturally relevant media made the campaign feel less like health marketing and more like a love letter — both sincere and deeply rooted in San Francisco’s identity.
