For nearly three centuries, the evolution of distance education has mirrored advances in communications technology. Yet through every transformation—from mail-order postcards to asynchronous web portals—the underlying debates surrounding academic integrity, quality, and efficacy have followed the entire way and remained remarkably constant.
Distance learning has always unlocked incredible access for self-motivated individuals who cannot attend a physical campus. But every advance designed to democratize information has brought equal incentive for bad actors to profit from or game the system. In the late 19th century, universities panicked over “proxy writing” and commercial “diploma mills.” When public funds flooded distance education through the post-WWII GI Bill, low-quality programs quickly emerged to capitalize on federal dollars.
Throughout this history, human behavior has remained steady. Early research demonstrated that students who persisted and completed correspondence courses attained, and sometimes surpassed, the outcomes of their in-person peers. Modern employer surveys confirm this same dynamic: global employers actively seek out online graduates who demonstrate the self-discipline, time management, and digital literacy required to navigate remote learning environments.
AI is an amplifier, not the disease
Enter Generative AI. Many educators fear AI will break education, but AI isn’t introducing new vices—it is simply amplifying existing ones.
AI makes taking shortcuts faster, cheaper, and vastly more accessible. In doing so, it exposes a fatal vulnerability in modern distance learning: legacy assessment models. As researchers at The Conversation point out, asynchronous courses face the most acute academic integrity risks because students can use generative AI undetected without instructors ever observing their thinking processes.
We see this friction-free dynamic illustrated by a recent Washington Post investigation, where a writer was able to click through an electronic textbook, answer a flurry of multiple-choice questions, and earn college credit in just over an hour for under $100.
The optimization trap: Education vs. “candy”
While gaining access to skills and achieving that in short order is a blessing, this dynamic creates a double-edged sword for distance learning design. On one hand, bite-sized microlearning modules and gamified platforms provide accessibility and daily habit-building for busy adults. On the other hand, when platforms optimize for engagement metrics—such as Daily Active Users or course completion rates—over deep cognitive effort, even well-intentioned students get conned. They are fed educational “candy” that feels like progress, but yields little long-term knowledge acquisition. Meanwhile, the “social loafing” student looking merely to check a box gains an effortless path to a credential.
This leaves employers and institutions facing a spectrum of actors:
- Malicious bad actors operating modern diploma mills.
- Well-intentioned educators whose desire for maximum access leads to friction-free, low-rigor design with unintended consequences.
- Earnest students working hard to gain real competence with flexibility and affordability.
- Box-checkers looking for the path of least resistance.
Moving beyond “Caveat Emptor”
Driven by corporate training adoption and flexible adult degree programs, online programs will continue to proliferate rapidly. At the same time, AI tools offer promising avenues for personalized digital tutoring and lower delivery costs that boost completion rates.
However, as an influx of generic AI-generated content risks diluting average course quality, the true premium in education is shifting away from raw information and toward human coaching, community, and accountability.
Innovative institutions are already proving that scale does not require sacrificing academic rigor. As Arizona State University President Michael Crow demonstrated, by pairing strong faculty with digital innovation, gateway subjects like calculus and chemistry can be re-architected to expand engineering enrollment from 6,000 to 35,000 students while maintaining high outcomes.
The fundamental promise of distance learning remains as vibrant today as it was in Caleb Philipps’s 1728 advertisement. The people who genuinely want to learn will continue to find a way, and those seeking to game the system will keep looking for shortcuts. To protect the true value of a credential, our task is not to fear the AI amplifier, but to fix the assessment models that let shortcuts pass for learning.
