Western Governors University is an accredited, affordable online university known for its innovative competency-based learning model and its catalog of more than 60 career-focused degrees. With several specialized colleges and a general education department, WGU relies on multiple learning management platforms to develop and deliver coursework to students.
Although WGU’s overarching brand is strong, its learning materials lacked unified visual design standards. For a fully online institution, creating a consistent experience across courses, colleges, and platforms was essential. WGU also needed guidelines that embedded accessibility best practices from the start.
To meet this need, Kiosk led interviews and workshops with academic and marketing stakeholders to understand the unique goals, challenges, and personalities of each college. Paired with competitive analysis and collaborative design exploration, this work helped us build consensus around a flexible visual system—one capable of working cross-platform and across the organization, while still honoring each college’s identity and reinforcing the WGU master brand.
